Meet Mr. Lucifer
Starring Stanley Holloway, with a cast that includes Barbara Murray, Gordon Jackson, Joan Sims, and Irene Handl, the 1953 film “Meet Mr. Lucifer” is transparently concerned with the potentially-detrimental effect on cinema ticket sales that the introduction of televisions into living rooms may have.
In the film, the television is literally the work of the devil and, as the set gets passed from owner to different owner in a series of vignettes, the evil effect of Lucifer’s invention wreaks havoc on the characters.
The film is an adaptation of the 1951 play “Beggar My Neighbour”, written by the actor & playwright Arnold Ridley who went on to appear in the film “Crooks in Cloisters” with Barbara Windsor & Bernard Cribbins, and to portray Private Godfrey in “Dad’s Army”.
“Meet Mr. Lucifer” opened on the 26th of November 1953 at the Haymarket Gaumont cinema in London.

“The Company of Youth” was a short-lived acting school for young actors & actresses under contract to the Rank Organisation. Derided by the press as the “Rank Charm School”, it seems unfair, given its alumni, to simply label it as a modelling agency for starlets, lent out for publicity shoots and to add glamour to premieres of films they weren’t even in.
One student was Barbara Murray who secured bit parts in the Rank production “To The Public Danger” and Ealing Studio’s “Saraband for Dead Lovers” with Joan Greenwood, Moira Lister, & John Gregson.
Her first role proper was as Stanley Holloway‘s daughter in the classic Ealing comedy “Passport to Pimlico” which also featured Charles Hawtrey, Margaret Rutherford, Basil Radford & Naunton Wayne.
Barbara Murray would go on to appear in films including “A Boy, A Girl, and A Bike” with Honor Blackman & Diana Dors, “Boys in Brown” with Richard Attenborough & Jack Warner, “Tony Draws a Horse” with Cecil Parker, “Another Man’s Poison” with Bette Davis, “Doctor at Large” with Dirk Bogarde & Shirley Eaton, as well as “Doctor in Distress”, with Dirk Bogarde, Dennis Price, & Fenella Fielding, “The Punch & Judy Man” with Tony Hancock & Hattie Jacques, cult 60s film “A Dandy in Aspic” with Laurence Harvey, “Some Will, Some Won’t” with Ronnie Corbett, “Up Pompeii” with Frankie Howerd, & “Tales from the Crypt” with Joan Collins & Peter Cushing.
Some of her television credits include “Danger Man” with Patrick McGoohan, “The Saint” with Roger Moore, “ITV Play of the Week”, “Department S”, and “Jason King”, all with Peter Wyngarde, “The Curse of King Tut’s Tomb” with Harry Andrews, the “Man About the House” spin-off “Robin’s Nest”, and “Doctor Who” with Peter Davison, to name a few.
